COR’s Overtime Policy

COR – the Kashruth Council of Canada has recently received inquiries on its policy on payment of overtime. Recent media reports have generated confusion about our practices which we wish to clarify.

Contrary to the press reports, COR does pay its mashgichim overtime. COR recognizes that its mashgichim are on the frontlines of kosher certification and supervision. They are the lifeblood of our organization and our community. Without them, kosher consumers would not have access to kosher certified food at the high standards for which COR is known. This is why COR’s overtime practices are in fact over and above the legal standards prescribed by the Employment Standards Act, 2000.

COR is a non-profit organization which provides kosher certification in Ontario and across Canada. It has served Canadian kosher consumers for over 60 years. Approximately 85 staff, many of whom are respected rabbis, teachers and lay leaders in our community, work at COR. All of COR’s mashgichim get paid for their overtime work.

We regret that our overtime policy has been inaccurately portrayed. If there is any silver lining to the recent publicity, it is that this affords COR the opportunity to reaffirm the value that mashgichim add to our organization and to the community.
